York-Poquson Sheriff’s Office to Hold Safe Driving Legislative Roundtable to Welcome ‘100 Safest Days of Summer’

YORK COUNTY — The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office will host the official kickoff event for the 100 Safest Days of Summer Coalition on Tuesday, May 27 from 2-4 p.m.
The national initiative works to turn the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day, which is historically known as the “100 Deadliest Days” for teen drivers, into the safest time of year on our roadways.
The 100 Safest Days of Summer Coalition brings together lawmakers, law enforcement, schools, nonprofits, businesses, and community advocates from across the country with one shared goal: to prevent crashes and save lives through education, awareness, and action.
s part of the event, Del. Chad Green, along with Tammy Gweedo, Sen. Danny Diggs, and Sheriff Ron Montgomery, will be hosting a safe driving legislative roundtable. This conversation held with stakeholders from across the region will center around legislative and local actions that can be taken to reduce the amount of driving injuries, fatalities, and incidents on the roadways throughout Hampton Roads and the Commonwealth.
“Together, we can flip the narrative from tragedy to prevention. Everyone—across Virginia and beyond — is encouraged to share the resources, talk with family and friends, and leverage community and business networks to promote safer choices behind the wheel,” Gweedo said.
In addition to Green, Gweedo, Diggs, and Montgomery, representatives from York County Fire and Life Safety, the Virginia Department of Transportation, Virginia State Police, Williamsburg Area Transit Authority, Virginia DMV, Drive Smart Virginia, Drive Safe Hampton Roads, the Poquoson Mayor’s Office, Dominion Energy, YOVASO and more will also attend.
According to the program’s website, this movement provides free, ready-to-use weekly resources to promote safe driving behaviors and spark important conversations among teens, families, and communities. These materials are available at 100safestdaysofsummer.org and are designed for use in social media, outreach events, and peer-to-peer education.
Community members are encouraged to attend the kickoff event to hear from safety leaders and advocates, learn more about the campaign and discover ways to get involved.
“Working with Tammy and hearing the countless stories of tragedies across Virginia, something had to be done. Tammy was a fantastic partner in this, and I am glad that she will once again help find legislative answers to promote safe driving,” said Green.
