PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Every Virginia high school will receive new teen safe-driving signs for student parking lots through a partnership between the Gweedo Memorial Foundation and the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Nearly 100 schools have already received the signs. The rest will be delivered soon, according to a press release about the initiative.

The signs are designed for installation in student parking lots, delivering safety reminders to teenagers as they get behind the wheel each day. Written in English and Spanish, the signage focuses on everyday driving decisions that can prevent serious crashes, including:

• Phones Down. Eyes Up.

• Slow Down. Lives Up.

• Buckle Up. Every Ride.

• No License. No Driving.

• Food Down.  Focus Up.

• There is also a contest. Schools can enter to win $250 to use toward an after-Homecoming party. Just post pictures on social media of the signs at your school, and tag the Gweedo Memorial Foundation.

  Tammy McGee founded the Gweedo Memorial Foundation after her 16-year-old son, Conner, was killed in a crash involving an unlicensed teen driver. Over six years, the foundation has helped advance eight pieces of legislation in Virginia aimed at teen driving safety.

• McGee established the organization to address safe-driving choices through education and school outreach. “What we ignore, what we excuse and what we stay silent about can have life-changing consequences,” McGee said.
