RICHMOND, Va. (WDBJ) -New safe driving parking lot signs are being delivered to every high school in Virginia as part of a statewide safety initiative.

The signs are tied to Virginia’s 100 Safest Days of Summer campaign, launched by the Gweedo Memorial Foundation and the Virginia State Police on June 17, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Virginia State Police Headquarters in Richmond.

Campaign origins

The initiative aims to transform the traditionally recognized “100 Deadliest Days of Summer” into the 100 Safest Days of Summer through education, awareness, prevention, technology and community action.

The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is one of the most dangerous times on Virginia roadways, particularly for teen drivers. Increased travel, speeding, distraction, impairment and unlicensed driving contribute to preventable crashes and fatalities.

Organizers of the campaign say every crash is preventable and every life matters.

Event details

The June 17 launch event brought together law enforcement, transportation leaders, educators, youth advocates, elected officials and community partners.

After the event, attendees had the opportunity to experience LifeSafer’s Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) technology through hands-on demonstrations and vehicle test drives.
